Remove Mac malware from your Login Items. Most adware or spyware will try to sneak inside the bootup process. Good news, you don’t have to be Kaspersky to prevent this. Go to the Apple menu System Preferences. Choose Users & Groups section. Make sure if your username is highlighted. Open Login Items tab.
OnyxLocker ransomware removal instructionsWhat is OnyxLocker?
Like most ransomware-type programs, OnyxLocker is designed to encrypt victim's files and keep them inaccessible unless a ransom is paid. However, this particular ransomware does not encrypt all files. Anyway, it impossible to decrypt encrypted files without a tool that only OnyxLocker's developers have. OnyxLocker creates 10 ransom notes, such as 'Прочти меня! 0 .txt', 'Прочти меня! 1 .txt', and so on. All of them are identical and written in Russian language. Also, it renames all encrypted files by adding the '.onx' extension to their filenames. For instance, it renames a file named '1.jpg' to '1.jpg.onx', and so on. The person who discovered OnyxLocker is Alex Svirid.
As stated in all ransom notes, victims must pay a ransom in 12 hours after encryption. After that files will be lost permanently, it will not be possible to decrypt them anymore. Price of a decryption tool is $100, it must be paid in Bitcoins (cryptocurrency) via the provided Bitcoin wallet address. Also, it is made clear that there is not other way to decrypt files. Simply said, OnyxLocker's developers are the only ones who can help victims to get their files back. Unfortunately, it is true: typically, ransomware-type programs encrypt files using strong encryption algorithms and it is impossible to decrypt them without the tools that only cyber criminals who designed a particular ransomware have. Another problem is that cyber criminals should not be trusted, there is always a high possibility that they will not send decryption software and/or keys even after receiving the money. It leaves victims only one option - to restore files from a backup.
Screenshot of a message encouraging users to pay a ransom to decrypt their compromised data:
Most ransomware-type programs are quite similar, here are a couple of other examples of similar malware: Galacti-Crypter, Badday and OmniSphere. Typically, they lock (encrypt) files so that victims would be forced to pay cyber criminals money (cryptocurrency) for a decryption software and/or key. In most cases two main differences are size of a ransom and algorithm (symmetric or asymmetric) that was used to encrypt data. In one way or another, ransomware developers usually are the only ones who have tools that can decrypt files and there is no way decrypt files for free, unless ransomware is not finished (has bugs, flaws, etc.). In order to avoid data and financial loss caused by ransomware we recommend to always have data backed up and store it on a remote server or unplugged storage device.
How did ransomware infect my computer?
In most cases cyber criminals spread malicious programs through spam campaigns, fake/unofficial software updaters, Trojans, untrustworthy software download channels/tools and unofficial software 'cracking' (activation) tools. Spam email campaigns are used to infect computers via attachments (or web links that are designed to download malicious files). Typically, cyber criminals attach files such as Microsoft Office documents, JavaScript files, archives (like ZIP, RAR), PDF documents, executables (.exe files), etc. Their main goal is to trick recipients into opening a malicious files that, if opened, infects a computer with malware. Fake (unofficial) software updating tools are usually designed to install malicious programs instead of updates, fixes, or exploit bugs, flaws of outdated software that is already installed on a computer. Trojans are malicious programs that usually are designed to spread other software of this kind. However, it happens only when a computer is already infected with a Trojan. Third party downloaders, free file hosting, freeware download websites, Peer-to-Peer networks (like torrent clients, eMule, and so on) and other unreliable download sources are often used to spread malware too. Cyber criminals do it by simply uploading malicious files that are disguised as harmless, legitimate. They hope that someone will download and execute (open) them. Programs that supposed to activate paid software for free (bypass activations) often install malicious software and do not activate any installed software.
How to protect yourself from ransomware infections?
If some received email is irrelevant and it contains attachments or web links, it is not recommended to open any of its contents. Download all software using only direct links and official (trustworthy) websites. It is not recommended to use any of the channels we already mentioned above. Update installed software using tools or/and implemented functions that are provided by official software developers, not some unofficial, third party programs. Do not use software 'cracking' programs, their usage is a cyber crime. Besides, these programs often install computer infections. We also recommend to have a reputable anti-virus or anti-spyware software installed and enabled at all times. These tools are good at detecting and eliminating threats before they can do any damage. If your computer is already infected with OnyxLocker, we recommend running a scan withCombo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this ransomware.

To restore individual files encrypted by this ransomware, try using Windows Previous Versions feature. This method is only effective if the System Restore function was enabled on an infected operating system. Note that some variants of OnyxLocker are known to remove Shadow Volume Copies of the files, so this method may not work on all computers.
To restore a file, right-click over it, go into Properties, and select the Previous Versions tab. If the relevant file has a Restore Point, select it and click the 'Restore' button.
If you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking (or with Command Prompt), boot your computer using a rescue disk. Some variants of ransomware disable Safe Mode making its removal complicated. For this step, you require access to another computer.
To regain control of the files encrypted by OnyxLocker, you can also try using a program called Shadow Explorer. More information on how to use this program is available here.
To protect your computer from file encryption ransomware such as this, use reputable antivirus and anti-spyware programs. As an extra protection method, you can use programs called HitmanPro.Alert and EasySync CryptoMonitor, which artificially implant group policy objects into the registry to block rogue programs such as OnyxLocker ransomware.
Note that Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes 'Controlled Folder Access' feature that blocks ransomware attempts to encrypt your files. By default this feature automatically protects files stored in Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Favorites as well as Desktop folders.
Windows 10 users should install this update to protect their data from ransomware attacks. Here's more information on how to get this update and add additional protection layer from ransomware infections.
